Block printing is an ancient way of putting designs into fabric using wooden blocks. It’s one of the oldest methods of printing and is known for its detailed and artistic results. Skilled artisans carve the designs into the wooden blocks by hand, then Ink is applied evenly onto block surface, then block is pressed onto the fabric surface to transfer the pattern. Block craving is the first step of developing block printed fabric. Skilled artisans carve the designs into wooden blocks by hand. Each block represents one color in the final print.
Inks are mixed and prepared for printing. Ink is applied evenly into the surface of the block. Artisans make sure that the color covers the raised parts of the design. Once the block is inked, it’s ready to print. Fabric is placed on flat surface and the inked block carefully press onto it. Even pressure applied to ensure the entire design transfers onto the material. Each block is carefully aligned to create the complete pattern.
After printing, the fabric is left to dry to set the colors completely. This usually takes a few hours depending on the type of ink used.
The printed fabrics get washed by hand to remove excess dye or fixatives. We adopt sustainable practices such as reusing the water and sun and wind drying the fabrics. These processes are performed by hand.
